Odd place to find a submarine museum until you learn the history of how Holbrook was named. Museum itself is small but tightly packed with artifacts from Australian submarines - uniforms, badges, medals, memorabilia and folk art. There is a recreation of a bridge, state room and bunks from a submarine which is enough to give an impression of the crowded quarters. The holographic video display is suitably dramatic in parts and endearingly quirky. Worth a look if you are in Holbrook.
One of the must do stopover when driving between Melbourne and Sydney/Canberra.I know its weired to imagine a submarine displayed inland but hey the name of this town was changed to honour decorated WW1 hero Lt Norman Douglas Holbrook who captained the unsinkable terror (submarine HMS B11). The submarine displayed is the hull of real HMS B11 submarine and you can see the sheer size of it. The museum is great as it offers a great insight into the life of the mariners in submarine. There are 6 displays to showcase various sections of the submarine. They have a good 3d holographic story narration for the curious minds that takes you through the achivements of HMS B11.
Due to a detour off the Hume Hwy, I stopped for some photos. I remember stopping here when I was young, on our trips to visit family in Sydney. Now theres a museum and a caf next to the HMAS Otway submarine. Though small, the museum was pretty great. Theres a recreated bridge of the same submarine, a look through the periscope and a hologram show telling the story of the submariner, the towns name and the submarine. Worth a stop if youre driving past.
Friendly and lots of things to do. X
Awesome little museum, it has great set up with lots of interactive and hands on stuff. The price of admission is well worth keeping the museum going. The gift shop is a little pricey, but you can get some great knick knacks or toys for the kids to keep them quite on the road.
